History[]

Pre-1914[]

Between 1825 and 1836 there were a series of explorations of the regions, including that of Charles Darwin in 1834. In 1860 commander Luis Piedrabuena established a base on Isla Pavón in the estuary of Puerto Deseado.

It was a French protectorate between 1861 and 1900, when it's protection was given to Río de la Plata. France and Britain had opposed the brutal Hispanic colonisation and set up a more enlightened regime of thire own until Río de la Plata had become less brutish. The British ran the Falklands, S. Georgia and related islands as a colony. The Falklands were added to Patagonia in 1901 so as to forestall Rio de la Plata claims to it.South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands ceased to be administered as a Falkland Islands Dependency and became a separate territory. Port Stanley was nonetheless the biggest Anglo populated town in the region as the Falklands developed as a major British whaling and sheep farming area. Oil, sheep farming, cattle farming and mining would dominate the mainland after 1890.

The Anti-Serbia War (1914-1918)[]

Patagonia remained neutral.

The inter-war years[]

The Great Depression (1929-1940)[]

The economy collapsed for about 5 years and protectionist measures were brought in until the economy was back in order.

The Anti-Hitlerian War (1939-1946)[]

Patagonia remained neutral.

Cold War[]

It was a neutral nation. Chile built several noth-south connective roads through Araucanía in the 1960s.

The 1972-1975 Allende-Pinochet Civil War spilled over from Chile in 1974 and 1975, leading to heavy losses in Araucanía. It was reckoned up to 300 forced disappearances, 500 deaths and 7,000 injuries had occurred Araucanía at the time. Río de la Plata sent Batallón de Inteligencia 601 in to the region in the 1970s to 'undermine communism' It is accused of going crazy in northern Patagonia; with 5,000 killed, 7,000 wounded and 500 "disappeared" between 1975 and mid-1978.

1990s[]

Chile agreed to give generous compensation to the people of Araucanía in 1998.

Life today[]

Comodoro Rivadavia Military Air Base\General Enrique Mosconi International Airport (Spanish: Aeropuerto Internacional General Enrigue Mosconi) (IATA: CRD, ICAO: SAVC) in Chubut Province is the main Reoplates base in the region.

The main British military facility in the region is at RAF Mount Pleasant and the adjacent Mare Harbour naval base on East Falkland island.

Economy[]

Ranching, forestry, fishing, food processing and quarrying dominate the economy. The promise of offshore-oil riches has oft been dangled over the Falkland Islands economy for years. Seismic data go back as far as the 1950s; exploratory wells were drilled in 1998.

A joint Patagonian, British, Chilean and Rio de la Plata oil prospecting mission has found substantial oil and natural gas reserves to the east and south east.

Nukes[]

Río de la Plata test detonated a bomb in it's territory during 1985.
