San Jose Motorplex is a motorsports race track and drag course complex located in Gilroy, California and owned by Johnson Industries. It currently hosts NASCAR RCA Cup Series, Arby's Convertible Series, Busch Series, Craftsman Truck Series, ARCA Menards Series, USAC Gold Crown Series, USAC Silver Crown Series, and NHRA events, as well as touring series.

The large race track is a 2.58-mile oval that first opened in 1990 for major events, and a smaller dirt track opened at the same time for touring series. The drag course opened in 1992, and an infield road course was added in 1998 for American Le Mans Series (now IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship).

History[]

In early 1987, shortly after purchasing NASCAR, then-Johnson Industries CEO Phil Stacker started work on a racing complex near San Jose (where Johnson is historically based at). After six months of negotiations, construction on the speedway began on October 10, 1987. It opened on January 25, 1990.

Design[]

The racetrack is an oval with progressive banking in the turns, ranging from 20 degrees to 32.5 degrees. The banking is high enough, and speeds fast enough, that all cars are required to use restrictor plates.

The racetrack has a unique feature, in that the start-finish line is located right at the entrance to turn 1, similar to Talladega Superspeedway; prior to the 2012 repave, the start-finish line was at the exit of turn 4.

San Jose Motorplex also has its own train station along Continental Rail's Northwest Corridor that is only served on race days.
