Super Mario Bros. is an American computer-animated series based on the Super Mario video game franchise by Nintendo. Developed by Tim and Chloe Johnson, who also executive produce alongside Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto, it follows the adventures of Mario and Luigi and their various adventures in the Mushroom Kingdom.

The series was officially announced on March 10, 2020 (also known as "Mario Day"), and premiered on WBC's Saturday morning lineup on September 17, 2022.

Premise[]

Super Mario Bros. follows two Italian-American plumbers, Mario and Luigi, who live in the Mushroom Kingdom. Many episodes involve the two brothers working to save the kingdom and its ruler, Princess Peach, from the evil Bowser, sometimes with the help of Princess Daisy, Donkey Kong, or others. Several recurring segments focus on other parts of the Mario mythos, such as Yoshi's Island, Donkey Kong Country, Wario Land, and WarioWare.

Production[]

Development[]

Production on the series began in 2019.

Casting[]

The voice actors from the video games reprise their roles, including Charles Martinet as Mario, Luigi, Wario, and Waluigi in the first season, Samantha Kelly as Princess Peach, Scott Burns as Bowser, and Giselle Fernandez as Princess Daisy. Tara Strong (who previously voiced Hop Koopa in The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World) was cast as Yoshi, though recordings of Kazumi Totaka are still used for the character's vocal effects. Strong also voices Kiddy Kong in the Donkey Kong Country segments.

In episodes taking place on Yoshi's Island, there is a principal cast of four Yoshis, each of whom can speak English and have individual voice actors. Kamek is voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson. For Donkey Kong Country episodes, most of the cast is new, with Richard Yearwood, Andrew Sabiston, Donald Burda, Benedict Campbell, and Adrian Truss reprising their respective roles as Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, Bluster Kong, King K. Rool, and General Klump from the 1997-2000 Donkey Kong Country television series (with stock audio of Grant Kirkhope and Takashi Nagasako used for Donkey Kong's roars). Nicole Sullivan voices Captain Syrup in Wario Land episodes, and in WarioWare episodes, all voice actors reprise their roles from WarioWare Gold.

Writing[]

The writing is provided by Johnson's in-house writing team, with Chloe serving as head writer.

Animation[]

The animation for the series is provided by Technicolor Animation Productions, using the CGI artstyle from the games.

Music[]

All music for the series is composed by Ego Plum, incorporating instruments from the Nintendo Entertainment System's soundchip. An arrangement of the iconic theme song from the original 1985 video game (originally composed by Koji Kondo) will be used as the theme song for the series, also composed by Plum.

Broadcast history[]

The series premiered on WBC on September 17, 2022.
