Tokyo Superspeedway is a racing facility located at the Tokyo Racing Complex in Tama, Kantō that opened on December 1, 2015. It hosts races in the NASCAR RCA Cup Series, the NASCAR Arby's Convertible Series, the NASCAR Busch Series, and the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, as well as USAC, ARCA and IROC. The speedway is owned and operated by Johnson Industries through its International Speedway Corporation subsidiary. It has been used in various movies and television series, as well as for testing purposes.
History[]
Early development[]
Early in the 2014 NASCAR RCA Cup Series season, Belle Armstrong came up with the idea of bringing NASCAR back to the Japanese Isles (after two exhibition events were held at Suzuka Circuit in 1996 and 1997, followed by another at Twin Ring Motegi in 1998) after a honeymoon with Tim Johnson, who saw it as the perfect opportunity to add a sixth restrictor-plate track to the schedule (as he has confessed to restrictor-plate racing being his favorite), as well as a way of expanding NASCAR's presence in the United States. The speedway broke ground on April 14, 2014, in a ceremony attended by Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Adam Petty, Kyle Busch, and Tony Stewart.
Opening[]
On December 1, 2015, the speedway officially opened. The first test sessions were held on January 30, 2016, with Dale Earnhardt Jr., Brad Keselowski, Kyle Busch, Tony Stewart, Adam Petty, Chase Elliott, Joey Logano, and other drivers participating.
2020 Summer Olympics[]
The speedway hosted the stock car motorsports events during the 2020 Summer Olympics.
Film and television appearances[]
Tokyo Speedway has appeared in Sophie D'Amico and TBA.
Design[]
Tokyo Superspeedway is notable for its inverted tri-oval design compared to Daytona and Talladega, in which the frontstretch is the straightaway and the backstretch is the curved section. The speeds are high enough that all cars are required to use restrictor plates.
